umbra finials

background

At Umbra, I’ve designed quite a few finials! The window category is much larger than any other category at Umbra so this section is always changing and I’m almost always guaranteed to be working on something window related. Here’s a look at the window finials I’ve launched to date:

The Creative process

For something purely decorative like a finial, I usually look for inspiration on Pinterest. for finials specifically, I am largely inspired by earrings, lighting, and architecture.

Blossom finial

This was the initial pitch. The design was interesting but because this would be injection molded, the undercuts would have to be resolved.

Before and after of the initial pitch and the design once the undercuts were resolved.

working in CAD

I started by revolving a circle, splitting the surface where I wanted the petals, and offsetting the surface. Then I lofted between the two surfaces with strategically placed guide curves. I finished it all up by patterning, knitting and thickening to produce this repeating petal shape. Overall I am really satisfied with the end result!
