Umbra asked its team of designers to design a new gallery wall for their catalog collection. Umbra went with this design because it presents a low-damaging solution to creating a gallery wall. It also is endlessly customizable, so the user can modify the layout to their needs, even after installation!
Initial sketches and early construction ideation
I really wanted this product to be as customizable as possible. This means that the rail should be able to be mounted at any angle and that the frames should be able to rotate to accommodate any position.
Construction
I decided to keep the construction as simple as possible to ensure the easiest installation possible for the consumer. Each frame has a special clip that’s riveted to it’s backing. The consumer simply clips each frame on the rail and can turn the frame to their desired position.
Because it’s just a clip holding the frames in place, I went through many, many tweaks in this clip to ensure the tolerances were juuuuust right. The final result is a clip that easily clips on, but doesn’t pop off or slide down without intentional force.
