Cubiko Wall Planter
A modular planter system for indoor/outdoor
ABOUT
Umbra asked its team of designers to come up with a new and modern wall planter to follow the success of it’s bestselling Triflora planter. The Cubiko Wall Planter was the one the team selected to develop.
Market Research
Here is a sample of the market research I did before going into design. I wanted to see what features were out there and if I could expand upon any of them to make something unique and highly marketable.
Initial sketches and early construction ideation
The initial design does not change very much from the final design. Initially, I had pitched 4 different pot sizes but we ended up going with 3 different pots to save on tooling. Also shown here are some initial ideas pitched for construction.
FDMs and figuring things out
Many foam core mockups were made throughout this stage. The most challenging part was figuring out how the planter would attach to the frame securely and without slipping down.
FINAL INTENT + PATENT DRAWINGS
getting it right
The sample we got back had some issues with tolerance. I worked closely with the development team at Umbra to perfect the mounting piece to ensure everything would work as expected. This meant that the pots must be secure in place regardless of orientation, that there is no drooping of the pots - especially when loaded to their fullest weight capacity, and that the assembly was seamless for the consumer. It was no easy feat and I learned so much through this process.
